From lung to liver
Our final insight is an interesting study which suggests that STEEN solution, the well-established perfusate for ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), seems to offer similar benefits in ex-vivo liver perfusion too. A recent comparative study(7) on pig liver transplant outcomes in which ex-vivo liver perfusion in a DCD model was performed with either STEEN solution, bovine-gelatin or packed red cells + plasma, revealed that livers perfused with STEEN solution scored highest outcome ratings in a broad battery of physiological parameters. The STEEN group displayed less graft injury – and improved liver function and survival after transplantation.
