New rule to reduce regulatory burden on US transplant centers
The US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have passed a new rule that aims to reduce the regulatory and administrative burden on healthcare providers. The Omnibus Burden Reduction will eliminate the requirement for transplant centers to submit their experience data and clinical outcomes for re-approval by the CMS. These regulations have been so burdensome that transplant centers have potentially avoided using high-risk organs or transplanting patients who are less likely to survive for an extended period post-transplant. Easing the regulation will result in more organs available for transplant and an increased flexibility for transplant centers to treat patients that need a transplantation.
